Roller garage doors contain a roller mechanism which conceals the door at the top of the garage when open. This makes them a fantastic solution for lots of residential and commercial properties, offering space-saving convenience and high levels of security.

Although roller garage doors are extremely reliable, like all mechanical systems, they can get damaged and stop working properly.

In this article, we’ll discuss the best approach for dealing with damaged roller doors – should they be repaired or replaced?

How do Roller Garage Doors Get Damaged?

Roller garage doors can suffer from either physical or mechanical damage.

Physical Damage

Physical damage tends to happen if the exterior of the roller garage door has suffered from exterior impact. This may be because of:

  • A break in or attempted break in – this can cause damage to the slats of a roller door.
  • Bad weather – high winds can result in branches falling off trees which can cause impact damage to the slats of roller doors.
  • Vehicle collision – because of their frequent proximity to cars, vans and lorries, it’s not unusual for garage doors to suffer impact damage from vehicle accidents. This often results in dents and dislodged slats.
  • Wear and tear – other physical damage, such as dents, peeling paint and scratches, can be caused by wear and tear and environmental conditions.

Mechanical Damage

Mechanical damage happens when something has gone wrong with the internal mechanism of the roller garage door. This can happen for a number of reasons. Following a maintenance routine can help avoid mechanical damage, though some issues still happen unexpectedly.

The primary causes of mechanical damage are:

  • Broken springs – the springs in roller garage doors help make the door feel lightweight and easy to lift. The springs can break, particularly after years of wear. The door will feel hard to open and close if this happens, but replacing the springs is easily done.
  • Snapped cables – a series of cables help garage doors lift weightlessly. Cables can fray and break, making the door difficult and dangerous to move. When the cables are replaced, the door will function properly again.
  • Worn rollers – the rollers help a garage door move smoothly, but they can get worn over time. Replacing the rollers can help the door move more easily if it was getting stuck. The track that the rollers move along can also get bent over time, needing replacing.
  • Worn bolts/hinges etc. - garage doors feature plenty of bolts and hardware which can get worn over time. They may simply require oiling, or they may need replacing depending on their condition.
  • An electrical fault – many roller garage doors feature an electronic system to open and close the door. Occasionally, an electrical fault or problem with the circuit may cause this system to stop working.
